Elementary School Learning Support

The Learning Support teacher plays a critical role in fostering an educational environment that emphasizes targeted intervention and remediation to help students overcome academic challenges. The teacher is responsible for developing, organizing, and implementing a comprehensive instructional and intervention program that uses evidence-based strategies to address diverse learning needs and promote measurable academic growth. Success in this role requires relevant, up-to-date degrees and certifications in learning support or special education, along with a demonstrated commitment to proactive, individualized student support aligned with ISB’s philosophy.

Core Responsibilities

• Work closely with the intervention team, divisional administration, teachers, students, and parents to craft individual learning plans to help students achieve greater success with grade-level curriculum

• Monitor and evaluate student progress in interventions to ensure they are closing academic gaps and moving toward grade-level expectation 

• Collaborate effectively with colleagues to ensure authentic learning experiences for students who are receiving various types of support, including the development of accommodations or modifications in the classroom

• Actively seeks professional growth opportunities to enhance practices and programs, including presenting to colleagues

• Conduct educational screenings using tools such as the WIAT, WJ and KeyMath 

• Collaborate with the student support team to identify students who are possibly at risk and to develop both short-term and longer-term support plans

• Positively contribute to school culture through support and sponsorship of a student club or non-stipended extracurricular activity

• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A valid teaching license or certification in learning support or special education

• At least three years of relevant and recent teaching experience

• Extensive experience:

  • Collaborating with homeroom teachers to develop differentiation strategies, accommodations and modifications in support of student learning

  • Working within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework for intervention

  • Developing and implementing Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs)

• Qualifications and experience in administering and interpreting normative assessments to inform decision-making.

• Extensive experience with research-based tier 3 reading interventions, math interventions, and writing interventions using direct instruction.

• Experience using data to inform instruction through a Professional Learning Community (PLC) 

Preferred Qualifications

• Qualifications and/or experience in specialized instructional programs for students with dyslexia, such as the Wilson Reading System
